Ms.
Wesson is in great demand as one of South Africa's top young opera
singers and is enjoying an exciting and enterprising career. Her
artistic performances range from character roles in musicals such as
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and THE SOUND OF MUSIC to
portraying sensual, sexy roles such as CARMEN and MADDALENA
to somber poignant Baroque concerts sung in glorious Venetian
Palaces to televised glamorous orchestral gala concerts. Not only
has Ms. Wesson been blessed with a rich passionate mezzo-soprano
voice, is musically and vocally gifted , she is radiant and moves
with grace, elegance and assurance.
Ms.
Wesson was born in Cape Town where she finished her operatic studies
at the Cape Town University under the guidance of Dr. Nellie
Du Toit and Prof. Angelo Gobbato
.
Before
moving to Italy, Ms. Wesson made her operatic debut in Cape Town at
the Artscape Theatre as the main protagonist in the international
premier of Michael William’s opera “THE ORPHANS
OF QUMBU” and there on toured with the production around the
Cape Province and to the Grahamstown Arts Festival, where she was
also involved as a soloist in other productions. Receiving wonderful
reviews Ms. Wesson went on to sing the lead role in Albie
Louw’s contemporary opera “TIME OUT IN THE PARK”
at the Artscape Theater.
Ms.
Wesson also sang the role of Cherubino from Mozart’s opera
“LE NOZZE DI FIGARO” and Hansel from Humperdinck’s
opera “HANSEL UND GRETEL”. From the Italian repertoire
she sang Tisbe from Rossini’s “LA CENERENTOLA”
and Sour Angelica from Puccini’s “SOUR ANGELICA”.
In the contemporary repertoire Ms.Wesson had great success as Sally
in Gian Carlo Menotti’s opera “A
HAND OF BRIDGE”
In
Italy, thanks to a study bursary, Ms. Wesson dedicated herself to
the belcanto vocal technique concentrating on Baroque and Classical
repertoire and had the great fortune to have master classes with Grace
Bumbry, Thomas Hampson and Richard Miller.
For
three years Ms. Wesson was the resident solo singer of the Venetian
Baroque Orchestra “COLLEGIUM DUCALE” where she was well
applauded for her interpretation of 17TH and 18TH century Italian
arias. These concerts were performed at PALAZZO DUCALE in
Piazza San Marco.
Ms.
Wesson was a regular guest performer with the VENETIAN SCHOOL OF
ANCIENT MUSIC at the QUERINI STAMPALIA FOUNDATION MUSEUM,
performing Chamber Music concerts with original instruments and
harpsichord.
After
winning a prize from the Wagner Association, presented by Prof.
Giuseppe Pugliese, Ms. Wesson sang at the Salzburg
Music Festival in the Mozarteum.
Ms.
Wesson also had the honor and privilege of singing on the ORIENT
EXPRESS TRAIN and was invited twice on their annual 12 day trip
to the East.
Ms.
Wesson represented South Africa in the MARIE KRAJA FOURTH
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF OPERATIC SINGERS in Albania at the
National Theatre of Tirana appearing for three consecutive nights on
international television with the Tirana National Orchestra
